"The strike of the loonies"

Synopsis
During the year 1956 the Naval Construction Trade Union, an anarquist traditional institution, begun a reclamation referring to their labour’s conditions, demanding a 6 hours daily shift  because of unhealthy conditions of work. Besides they requested  cultural, free time and living rights.

The owners closed the shipyard. So the workers transformed the owner’s Lock Out in a strike which lasted 14 months. This is known as “ the longest strike of the century”.

They lost the struggle. Hundreds of workers lost their jobs and the owners accepted another Trade Union without any support representing the naval workers.

The naval industry started its decline and practically no ships were built or repaired any longer in argentine ports.

Nevertheless, the Naval Construction Trade Union still remains in the memory of the workers as the authentic Trade Union.

The strike is remembered as a historical and personal event and even today is a milestone in the history of dignity and freedom in our country.
